Synopsis:
Gene Autry believes in progress, but in the matter of handling cattle rustlers, he is for the old-time methods. In support of his friend, the sheriff, he sets out to trap a gang of cattle thieves who employ radios, planes and refrigerator trucks in staging their profitable raids. Assisted by his friend, Frog Millhouse, Gene attempts to trace the stolen beef to local wholesale meat dealer Jack Shannon, who evades arrest by producing hides for every carcass in his plant. Aroused by scathing editorials penned by newspaper publisher Helen Morgan, the townspeople call in city detectives to combat the gang with modern crime detection methods. In defiance, the rustlers proceed to stage their biggest haul. Frog gets wind of this attempt on his short-wave set, and Gene sends out a call for help to the countryside. Gene and his pals on horses, and the detectives in a car, head for the trouble spot. After a gunfight, the crooks are captured and Gene snags the ringleaders, without any sign from the city detectives. It turns out that their car has bogged down in a swamp! The town decides to stick by the old-fashioned straight-shootin' sheriff with a few slight concessions to progress.
