Brief Synopsis:

Gene and his pal Pat help a wounded rancher and learn that the man’s son-in-law is suspected of the shooting.

Detailed Synopsis:
Gene Autry and Pat Buttram see Walt Darrington ambushed and shot by a lone man, but are too far away to identify the attacker. Gene and Pat ride to Darrington’s aid and stop his runaway buckboard. Before losing consciousness, Darrington whispers the name “Susan” and asks to be taken to his ranch. Susan is the wounded man’s daughter and is married, against her father’s wishes, to former foreman Jeff Elwood. The Sheriff and the men at the ranch think Elwood is responsible for the attack on Darrington because of the bad blood between the two. Thinking he's dying, Darrington asks for his daughter, who feels bitter towards her father. Susan is on the verge of walking out on Jeff because he won’t give up his new job and move away to keep from having trouble with her father. When she goes to see her father, Gene watches her baby, even singing a lullaby to the child. Later, Gene, who has hidden Jeff, returns to the scene of the ambush and uncovers important clues about the three heavies who are trying to get Darrington out of the way to take possession of his big ranch. Gene forces them, by a clever ruse, to reveal themselves, hunting them down and bringing them to justice. Darrington, assured of recovery, forgives Susan and Jeff.
