Brief Synopsis:

Gene is falsely accused of murder when he keeps information about a captured gunslinger’s secret rendezvous.

Detailed Synopsis:
When Gene Autry, accompanied by Pat Buttram, captures a professional gunslinger named Jackson, he finds a note mentioning a secret rendezvous in a cabin at Prospect Peak in the next county. Wondering who would want to hire a killer like Jackson, Gene leaves Pat to turn the captured man over to the sheriff and goes to Prospect Peak. Upon entering the cabin, he only has time to see a bound and gagged man before someone knocks him unconscious. Gene is confronted by the sheriff, the dead man's niece, Virginia, and Sam Taggert, foreman of the Rutledge Ranch, when he comes to. Accused of killing the man, he is taken to jail after failing to prove his innocence. Behind it all is Taggert, who wanted his boss out of the way and hired Jackson for the job. Later, Gene breaks out, and he and Pat, determined to discover the real criminals, go to the Rutledge Ranch where Gene convinces Virginia of his innocence. In search of clues at Prospect Peak, the cowboys are ambushed by Taggert’s henchmen, leading Gene to suspect Taggert. He heads back to the ranch, arriving just in time to save Virginia from being killed. Taggert and his henchmen are jailed, and Virginia happily learns of oil on her property.
