Brief Synopsis:
Gene sets out to capture his friend's killer, but when Sheriff Davis unwillingly cooperates in the search, Gene begins to suspect the lawman of being in cahoots with the outlaw.

Detailed Synopsis:
On the trail of Dude Devlin, his friend’s killer, U.S. Marshal Gene Autry stumbles onto a raging gunfight in Silver City involving the murderer and his gang. Sheriff Tom Becker is fatally wounded, so his deputy, Chill Wills, takes over the post. Gene and Chill decide to track down Dude together, leading them to Cactus County and Sheriff Davis. Chill warns Gene that Davis is very territorial, forbidding other county’s lawmen from rounding up outlaws in his district. Nevertheless, Gene and Chill visit Davis, who cooperates with their search for Dude because Gene works for the government. After the two cowboys leave, Davis visits the gang’s secret hideout in the desert to warn Dude, who is his brother. Gene and Chill run across two members of the gang on their way back to Silver City, and with the help of a clever ruse where Champion pretends to limp, Gene catches one of the outlaws. They immediately head back to Sheriff Davis, who has no choice but to jail the man. However, he secretly tips off his brother, and a jailbreak is organized. Gene is suspicious of Davis, so he and Chill wait behind for activity and witness the jailbreak. A grand fight breaks out, and Davis, who pretends to be on the right side during the brawl, knocks Gene unconscious. Gene immediately gets up, and he and Chill figure out that the sheriff and Dude are brothers with the help of Chill’s doodling. They round up a posse and capture the crooked sheriff, his brother, and the gang.
