Brief Synopsis:
A crooked oilman tries to defraud a rancher out of his valuable property, but Gene has the foresight to telegraph a few lawmen to check the promoter’s references.

Detailed Synopsis:
While carrying mortgage money, Flying M Ranch cook Pat Buttram is tricked into a chuck wagon race by neighboring ranch hands. Gene Autry arrives in time to take over and stop the ambush planned by the T Bar C men. Later, Reb Stearns starts a fight in town with telegraph operator Pop Wallace, who substituted a fake telegram for one Gene sent inquiring about the T Bar C’s new owner, Jim Eastman. Eastman's daughter, Gail, gets Gene to put his signature on a blank piece of paper, which she later uses to try to get the answer to his telegram. Pop is suspicious, so he gives her a fake telegram. The original states that Jim Eastman is a phony oil promoter wanted by the U.S. Marshal. Reb knocks out Pop and warns Eastman, who starts to escape in the ranch chuck wagon. Gene and Pat spot him, and a wild race follows where Eastman is knocked out by the lurching wagon. Searching him, Gene discovers the real telegram in his pocket. Realizing Pop must have been hurt in order for him to have it, they race back to town to rescue Pop after taking Eastman prisoner. Reb and Watson continue to put up a fight, but justice prevails and the whole gang is rounded up and put in jail to await the U.S. Marshal.
