Detailed Synopsis: In order to control the town of Goose Creek, Brad Bidwell has the bumbling Pat Buttram elected sheriff. Pat, unbeknownst to Bidwell, hires Gene Autry as his deputy, and his arrival throws a monkey wrench into Bidwells nefarious plans. As a result, Bidwell tries to make it hot for Gene by having his men stage a fight at the saloon, which only convinces Gene to stay in town. Pat receives a telegram informing him that convict Red Lambert has escaped from prison and is headed towards Goose Creek. Gene and Pat saddle their horses to try to head off the outlaw. Gene rides ahead of Pat, who is terribly affected by saddle sores. Red then waylays Pat, forces him to switch clothes with him, and takes his horse and gun. Meanwhile, Gene runs across Bidwells heavies and a gun battle ensues. Red, in Pats clothes, runs off the heavies and later ambushes Gene, taking away his gun. Gene and Pat head to Hiram Glovers ranch for guns so that they can continue the hunt for Red, who coincidentally has also gone to his former boss Glovers ranch. Glover helps Red escape and promises to hold Gene and Pat until Red is able to prove his innocence. By a clever ruse, Gene and Pat get away. Trailing Red, they find evidence convicting Bidwell of the murder of the former sheriff, who was thought to have run away. Red confronts Bidwell and is about to get a written confession absolving him of his crimes, when two henchmen appear. Gene and Pat arrive just in time to save Red and put the real culprits into the hands of the law.
