When he was a young man, Gene received an offer from a professional baseball team to become a player. Gene turned down the offer because it would have meant a fifty-dollar-a-month pay cut from his telegrapher's job.
Re-Installation of Gene Autry Case
Every now and then, museums will "refresh" exhibits to allow artifacts to rest and prevent damage that can happen to older items due to light exposure and humidity changes. In 2009 the Autry National Center changed out the Gene Autry case in the Imagination Gallery to give those items, such as Gene Autry's clothing and movie posters, a rest. This also lets the museum display pieces that fans want to see, such as Champion's famous gun bit.

For the first time ever, the Martin D-45 guitar is displayed as if Gene is playing it.
The case is taking shape with more artifacts still to come.

Sheet music, records and other documents are placed in the rail case.
