Synopsis:
When Pony Express Rider Gene Autry's horse is shot from under him, he falls, unconscious, and two attackers rob his mail sack of a package of money. Recovering later, Gene finds the torn wrapper, bearing the California address of Dolores Moreno, who was to use the cash to meet delinquent taxes on her vast ranch. Gene finds the wild horse El Diablo, escaped from the Moreno ranch, battling wolves and helps him, gaining the horse's confidence. The next morning, Gene rides El Diablo into the Moreno Ranch. The scheming owner of the adjoining ranch, Matt Ford, brings Gene's boss Caldwell, owner of the Pony Express, to the Moreno fiesta. Caldwell, in California to buy horses, is about to buy a large herd of Ford's thoroughbreds when he is stopped by Gene, who senses that Ford is out to rob Dolores of her ranch and prevent the sale of her mustangs. Gene suggests to his boss that mustangs have more endurance than thoroughbreds, and proposes a cross-country race to prove it. Ford is bitterly angered when Caldwell agrees to the competition. Ford tries to sabotage the race by stampeding the wild mustangs and by disguising a wild pinto to use as a reserve mount for the home stretch. Gene rides El Diablo, but is left alone after Ford's men have fouled most of Gene's men. Gene gains on Ford, who has now switched to his fresh mount, the wild pinto. However, the pinto is El Diablo's natural rival, so El Diablo refuses to let him win, and they race neck and neck to the finish line. During the argument over the tie, El Diablo breaks loose, goes for the wild pinto, and thus discloses the pinto's identity to Gene. Ford's trickery is exposed, as is his involvement with the mail robbery. Gene wins the contract for Dolores, and the two marry in happiness.
