Brief Synopsis:

Gene temporarily turns over his ranch to a former outlaw who wants to impress his visiting daughter.

Detailed Synopsis:

Leader of the notorious Bolton Gang, Ace Bolton, and his two brothers, Charlie and Pete, hold up the town bank. Ace's horse goes lame on the getaway, so he has to stop to switch horses at "Whopper" Daro's, a reformed member of the gang and a noted liar. Later, the sheriff finds the lathered horse and a bank wrapper in the barn and promptly sends Whopper to jail, where rancher Gene Autry and Pat Buttram visit him. He tells Gene he is innocent and that his daughter, Mary, is coming the next day for a visit. She believes him to be the successful owner of the Flying A Ranch. Gene bails him out of jail and goes along with the ruse of letting Mary think her dad owns the ranch. They dress Whopper to fit the occasion and meet the stage. Gene rescues Mary when a joke cigar backfires, scaring the horses. At the ranch, Mary announces her intention of running the property herself, dumbfounding Gene and the boys. By threatening to expose the deception to Mary, Ace makes Whopper promise to get the combination to Gene's safe. Whopper does as he is told, but later goes to the ranch while the robbery is underway to tell them the deal is off. Ace, already at the safe, has the money and a fight ensues. Meanwhile at camp, Mary tells Gene she knows Whopper has nothing. They discover Whopper is gone and go to the ranch. Hearing shots as they ride in, Gene goes to Whopper's aid and battles the outlaws. Whopper is shot during the fight, but Gene defeats the heavies. Ace says Whopper engineered the deal, but Gene vouches for Whopper and tells the sheriff the Boltons are the real crooks.
