Brief Synopsis:
Gene’s discovery of a dead man with a silver arrow in his chest leads him to a wrongfully convicted robber, who was framed for his silver mine.
Detailed Synopsis:
On their way to a rodeo in Pendleton, rodeo riders Gene Autry and Pat Buttram see a runaway wagon. After stopping the wagon, Gene finds a dead man with a silver arrow in his chest. He removes the arrow, puts the body in the wagon, and heads into Cottonwood. Gene and Pat find Sheriff Garner discussing convicted robber Randy Edwards' release from prison with attorney Frank Andrews. The sheriff identifies the dead man as Myron Foster, a former witness against Randy. Gene shows him the arrow. Andrews says it’s Randy’s sign, but Sheriff Garner ignores the attorney. He tells Gene about Randy’s trumped up conviction. While Randy was in prison, Andrews got the title to Randy’s mine, The Silver Arrow, on a legal fluke. From the evidence presented, Gene tells the sheriff he thinks Randy was framed for his mine, and the sheriff agrees. Gene asks Pat to set a trap to catch Randy before he can be killed by Andrews, which Pat does by cooking an aromatic stew, figuring that Randy is hungry. Later, Pat and Randy sneak into town and are seen by Andrews. When Andrews starts a lynch party, Gene hides Randy in a closet. Sheriff Garner searches the room and sees Randy, but ignores him. Jingo, a henchman, sees Pat and Randy leave and follows. He and café owner Sid Damon, the real leader of the gang, kidnap Randy from a cabin hideout and take him to the mine. By faking a fire, Gene is able to free Randy. Damon catches up and is about to shoot Gene when Pat fires from behind cover. Gene then ambushes Damon, who tells all. Sheriff Garner arrives, and Randy is finally cleared.
