Brief Synopsis:

When Gene befriends a young boy and a mistreated palomino, his kindness is repaid in an unexpected way while on the trail of bank robbers.

Detailed Synopsis:

A storm partially destroys Gene Autry's feed barn, so he and Tiny Jensen, his handyman, ride to town to buy lumber from Bert Hodge, who also auctions off cattle and horses. Bank robber Sam Blake and his gang, Ed Dolan, Nat Ellis, and Nat's kid-brother, Jeff, pose as horse traders having trouble with Fury, a magnificent palomino, who was the star of a bankrupt rodeo. Gene purchases the horse, but fights with Nat for abusing Jeff, who was protecting Fury from Nat's viciousness. Jeff runs away when he discovers the gang plans to rob the town bank. Gene takes Fury to his ranch but the horse escapes. Trailing Fury, Jeff is thrown from his own horse just as Gene and Tiny arrive. Thinking they are part of his brother's gang, Jeff starts shooting but is overpowered by Gene, who offers him a job training Fury for his own use. Jeff, overcome with gratitude, tells Gene about the planned robbery but not about his brother's part in it. Later, Nat forces Jeff to return to the gang under threat of harm to Gene. Jeff lets Fury go, and Nat, after beating Jeff unconscious, pursues the horse to kill it. After capturing Sam Blake, Gene and Tiny chase Nat and Ed, who have trapped Fury in the woods and are prepared to shoot him. A gun battle follows; Ed is wounded, and Nat plays possum hoping to outwit Gene. Jeff saves Gene's life after Nat takes off. He is about to escape when Fury breaks loose and goes after him. Gene takes over just as Fury is about to trample Nat to death. In the end, Jeff and Fury find a real home with their new friends, and the outlaws are brought to justice.
