Brief Synopsis:

Gene helps a Mexican boy kidnapped by a gang of outlaws who believe he knows the way to a legendary gold mine.

Detailed Synopsis:

Rancher Gene Autry and Pat Buttram meet Pepito Garcia, a Mexican boy who claims to know the secret location of a gold strike known as the "Lost Chance." They see an attack by Bo Hanlon's gang on rancher Art Daley and drive the outlaws off, but not before Daley is killed. In town, Gene wins Pepito's confidence by protecting him from two men who abuse Amigo, the boy's beloved burro. Pepito insists that he knows he can find the gold strike, but Gene considers it just a legend. However, Del Andrews, a neighboring rancher and the treasurer of the Cattlemen's Association, is inclined to believe the boy, who now works for Gene. Hanlon and his gang secretly work for Andrews, who embezzled funds from the Association. They attack the town bank to loot and destroy the records, but Gene thwarts them. Later, Pepito overhears the gang plotting in the hills. They seize him and force him to lead the way to the "Lost Chance" by threatening Amigo. The gold strike turns out to be a fluke, and the heavies turn their attention to Gene, who suspects Andrews. Trying to warn Gene, Pepito is almost killed in a buckboard runaway. Gene saves the boy, captures the heavies, and promises to educate Pepito with the reward money.
